The 45,000 square metre factory was designed for global manufacturing company Howden, in the city of Wei Hai in China. Howden produces fans, heat exchangers and compressed air pumps for the steel, mining and cement industries. Six small production units combined into one large, efficient, functional and modern production unit.
The new building features a large monolithic building volume, containing office and production buildings. The closed facades are simple and precise in white, perforated metal to define the exterior of the buildings. In contrast, the eastern facade is open and transparent, executed 100% in glass. Emphasis was placed on creating the best working environment for employees in the factory. The large production buildings are thus simple and light, with skylights in the ceiling and looking out onto green courtyards. The offices to the east are on three floors, with inviting open plan offices and individual cell offices. Three elongated courtyards create space and physical separation between the office building and the manufacturing units.
The building is slightly raised on a green plinth in a new business park. The sea can be seen in the distance from the top floors.
