RH ARKITEKTER’s competition entry for a new, large-scale university campus for the Danish University Centre in Beijing, financed by the Danish Industry Foundation.
The building will be the scene of Sino-Danish academic collaboration across a range of disciplines within scientific research, education and business, and is intended to be used 50/50 by Danish and Chinese personnel.
The principle idea is to create a building inviting to the local campus, and open to the world outside – nature, the mountains and the rapid flow of the main road.
The design focuses on sustainability, dividing the building up into comfort zones and featuring brissoleis construction, reminiscent of a ship entering harbour.
The comfort zones are inspired by the Danish seasons, imitating the transition from the warm summer air to the cool interior, for example. All flow and interaction within the building take place in these zones, whilst sedentary, concentrated and private work takes place in the traditionally air-conditioned rooms.
