RH ARKITEKTER has refurbished building 5A at Novo Nordisk in Bagsværd – originally designed by the architect Arne Jacobsen in 1968 – with new offices containing meeting facilities, an educational centre and canteen. The aim was to create a deliberate contrast between new and old. Ceiling height was retained for most of the project, and new rooms and functions requiring lower ceilings are placed in separate areas that manifest themselves as modern architectural elements.
The south-facing facade features yellow sheets of brick, broken by glass and steel entrance areas. Additional windows with sun screens have been integrated into the brick frontage, along with new skylights in the roof. The office areas are located along the southern facade, with their own quiet rooms, meeting rooms etc., and the various office sections are broken up by a combination of glass partitions and fixed walls.
The canteen is the hub of the building, with a high ceiling punctuated by skylights, large glass facades facing outwards and veneered walls. The education centre is centrally located in the building between the canteen and green walkway as a precisely-defined building with veneer classing. A café area has been created in the green walkway surrounded by room-height walls topped with creeper plants.
