The research laboratories at FEF Chemicals were designed with the aim of simplicity, functionality and clarity. The ground floor of the existing warehouse was converted to state of the art laboratories with their own open plan offices, kitchenette and meeting facilities. The labs are located along a corridor with glass walls from floor to ceiling to accommodate visual contact and the best possible working environment. All the office workstations and GMO-1 laboratories have daylight and a view, whilst the microscopy laboratories are located in the centre of the building, where daylight has to be excluded for the sake of working routines and functions.

A new entrance, portico and offices with a view over the bay were built. The entrance features a lightweight cedar screen wall, with a new fire escape descending along it from the first floor. To facilitate access and servicing installations, a dedicated corridor was provided running behind the laboratories and large ceiling panels allow easy access to the space above the ceiling.

RH DESIGN has designed the Visionlab laboratory furniture range and Extend Lamp – both of which are now in use in the labs.
