The infectious disease unit at Hvidovre Hospital is the first in the country of its type, and classified to isolate and treat patients with highly infectious diseases such as smallpox, SARS, avian influenza and any future exotic diseases (class 3 agents).
Particular focus was placed on providing the best, functional and safe facilities for the staff and patients who are often hospitalised for long periods.
The challenge with this type of unit for highly infectious diseases is to build a high-tech facility with sterile doors, ease of cleaning and pressure difference without degrading patient welfare, the flow of personnel or level of care.
In line with our fundamental ambition to make the complex simple, RH ARKITEKTER aimed for a high degree of refinement for the wide range of technical installations required to make them more pleasant to touch and look at. We also worked on simple identity creating, yet subdued colour schemes for fixtures, fittings and surfaces. We designed a new, encapsulated light fitting that ensures low pressure can be maintained in a room in relation to the higher pressure above the suspended ceiling.
