RH ARKITEKTER designed the Shuangyang Lake International Nursing Home, just outside the city Changchun in north eastern China. The centre functions as a retirement community, and is located in a scenic area, accommodating a total of 4,500 residents and staff.
The building drew on the experience gained from the highly specialised Danish nursing sector, and includes a residential complex, staff accommodation, treatment and healthcare facilities, shops, restaurants and hotel.
An important element of the master plan was focus on sustainability and eco-friendly energy generation from photovoltaic cells and solar panels, cooling from the local lake and refuse sorting.
The project features two main buildings, each located in a woodland clearing: a central complex with the actual nursing home, and a residential complex with 100 dwellings for the elderly. The site also includes a smaller clearing with two staff accommodation blocks.
The buildings themselves are designed to resemble mountain tops peaking above the landscape, with support facilities and public areas at ground level. The natural slope is used to provide a view of the nearby lake and to provide privacy.
