Expertise
Our approach to the architecture and design of animal facilities is based on our experience and understanding of the industry's high requirements and standards.
We work closely with our customers to ensure that their specific needs and visions are met. Our objective is to design functional and visually appealing structures that fulfill customer demands, while also promoting a conducive environment for both animals and humans.
It is crucial to consider the requirements and preferences of the users before finalizing the building layout. The design of the floor plan should be tailored to the specific animals involved and the types of experiments to be conducted.
Louise Krog Poulsen, Associate Partner & specialist in animal facilities
We have experience in designing buildings with animal facilities for both large and small creatures. Our expertise covers various types of animal facilities for in-vivo, ex-vivo, and in-vitro experiments, including animal houses, operating rooms, test rooms, and laboratories with different GMO classes.
We recognize the importance of maintaining a safe and controlled environment for the animals while providing optimal working conditions for staff.
When we establish facilities for animals, we always abide by the legal regulations and standards that ensure their optimal living conditions and well-being.
Our projects may involve the accreditation program of AAALAC, which necessitates our clients to provide comprehensive documentation about their program for the use of animals in scientific research.
Through optimizing the layout and placement of different areas, we ensure a seamless and effortless flow throughout the building for both the staff and animals. This contributes to better workflow and safety for all involved parties.
In certain projects, test laboratories and animal houses are positioned close together in suites, minimizing transportation between rooms for the animals. It is often referred to as a containment facility with a division into clean and unclean areas, and a one-way flow for animals and materials.
We place great importance on minimizing the risk of disease transmission and infection by implementing efficient space planning. To prevent cross-contamination, we design Lab suites with separate ventilation systems which ensures that infection does not occur through the air between different areas.
We provide custom solutions to ensure that animals do not mingle with animals from other parts of the facility. When a room needs to be cleaned, we typically use fumigation to remove all bacteria and viruses, which puts a great demand on the room density and the choice of materials and surfaces.
